Tips for Living Off Campus
VCU is an equal opportunity/affirmative action university. Contact us at offcampus@vcu.edu for more information.
Welcome to the neighborhood! We are excited that you have chosen to live within the Richmond City limits. VCU and the local residents are working hard to create strong and safe neighborhoods. Let's all do our part to make Richmond a better place to live, learn, work and play!
We encourage you to establish an avenue for open communication by introducing yourself to your neighbors and exchanging contact information.
VCU CODE OF CONDUCT
If you are a member of the VCU community, either as a student, faculty and/or staff member, you should know that the VCU Code of Conduct applies on campus, as well as off campus.
TRASH COLLECTION
Receptacles shall be placed on City property or in the public right-of-way no earlier than 4:00p.m. the day prior to collection and requires the receptacles be removed by 7:00 a.m. the day after collection. Leaving receptacles on public sidewalks, alleys, roads and other city property isn't just unsightly, it also creates unsafe conditions for pedestrians and vehicles.
RECYCLING & BULK PICK-UP
These are collected in the same location as your trash, but every other week. Recycling is collected in its own receptacle, while bulk items should be placed alongside your trash bin. Bins must be removed within 24 hours after collection. Recycling can include cardboard, paper, glass bottles, cans and plastic bottles. Do not include: plastic bags, Styrofoam, or food contaminated items (including pizza boxes). Bulk items that will not fit in your trash receptacle include yard debris, furniture, mattresses and other large items. Appliances can be picked up for an additional fee. City ordinances prohibit the accumulation of items on private and public property, so be sure to follow designated pickup schedules. For more information, please visit cvwma.com and rva.gov.
PARKING
A parking permit is required in some neighborhoods. Be sure to park in designated spots and with the flow of traffic. For more information, go to VCU Parking & Transportation. For information on obtaining parking decals, speak with your landlord or neighborhood association.
SOUND LEVELS
City of Richmond noise ordinances dictate the times and level of sounds that are acceptable. Please
be courteous to those you live with and near by keeping your noise to a respectful level, especially
during nighttime hours (11 p.m.-7 a.m.).
SAFETY TIPS
Keep your front and rear porch lights on. Do not keep valuables in your vehicle. Lock all doors and windows. Secure items that are outside including bikes, grills, outdoor furniture and other valuables. Take a look at this list of safety apps which you can download to stay connected and informed.
DONATIONS
Please donate to a local thrift store any items that are in fair condition and could be reused by someone else. These items can be donated to local thrift stores. Many local thrift stores will even come and pick up larger items. Local thrift stores options include: VCU's Free Store, CARITAS, Diversity Thrift, Fantastic Thrift, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Salvation Army and Goodwill.
CIVIC INVOLVMENT
Your neighborhood has its own association, led by resident volunteers. We encourage you to join, attend meetings and stay abreast of current events in the community. Help improve quality of life for yourself and your neighbors. Email neighbors@veu.edu to learn more.
PETS
As a pet owner, you are responsible for their actions. Be sure to keep them on a leash, be mindful of their noise and to pick up after them.
